Blues is the music of the soul – it is often said – and never have such words been as accurate and truthful as on this fantastic evening, which saw the return, after a long period, of the King of the resonator guitar, known as Mr. Eric Sardinas, an American guitar hero born in 1970 from Fort Lauderdale. On this magical evening at the equally excellent Druso venue that hosted him, he also took the opportunity to present his latest studio work (released in 2023 – “Midnight Junction”) which we had not yet heard in a “live version.” Opening the night was the band of the very talented guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and producer Fabio Nobili, who delivered a setlist dedicated to an excellent mix of blues, fusion, and singer-songwriter rock (unfortunately, having arrived late at the venue, I only heard the last songs, but… it was worth it. Very good!).

Everything was perfect to reach the climactic moment, the entrance on stage of the rebellious cowboy who, on this occasion, graced us by adding to his wild and extravagant look some “sparrowhawk mustaches” and, instead of his long curly hair, two huge braids sticking out from his ever-present hat! Once, I remember when I saw him in 2004 (if memory serves me correctly), he used to play shirtless and set his guitar on fire; this time he avoided both, focusing more on the performance, joy and delight for a purist of pulsating and aggressive hard blues rock like myself. But, attention, ours spared nothing and, in addition to a top-notch performance, still gave the audience a strong visual impact filled with charisma, interaction with fans, energy, and a confidence and command of the stage worthy of a showcase. We all know about his unique technique: naturally left-handed, he learned to use his right hand from a young age and then developed a highly personal way of playing – with the right hand – using all five fingers – fingerstyle – which sometimes seems as if they barely touch the strings, yet produce a multitude of notes and warm tones (in fact, this technique is based on using all the fingers to pluck the strings without a pick, helping to fully exploit the polyphonic potential of the instrument). Then, of course, lots of wah-wah and, above all, a slide guitar and an improvisation that make you experience the songs each time with a different mood. One example, the stunning ballad “8 Goin' South”, already exhilarating on the record, was performed with a heart-stopping pathos, especially in the opening part where Eric sang without a microphone with an incredible intensity that only those of us in the front rows could grasp. Then he moved closer to the microphone and continued the performance. A song that gains a thousand points live! Another track that gave me pleasure was “If You Don't Love Me” from the album “Boomerang”also in this case transformed and made even more engaging. But these are just two examples; there wasn't a single lackluster song, and indeed, we saw a guitarist in perfect form accompanied by a duo of phenomenal musicians in the rhythm section, Jason Langley – bass and Mario Steven Dawson – drums, who, among other things, delighted us with their respective drum and bass solos, making us enjoy when, during various passages, they played “We Will Rock You” by Queen and “Owner of a Lonely Hearts” by the legendary Yes. Sardinas gave us, in a sold-out venue packed with fans, about an hour and a quarter of joy and delight. A fantastic experience and a wonderful gift for all those who love music in its most genuine and visceral form.
