Abbiamo raggiunto la brava ed avvenente (ma un poco criptica) Netta Laurenne leader e vocalist dell'alternative metal band Smackbound da pochi mesi usciti con il secondo full lenght album “Hostage”...

Ciao Netta, sono Roby Comanducci, fondatore del Cathouse Italy Rock'n'Roll Project, progetto che organizza eventi in tutta Italia, dj set e ha anche un'intensa attività giornalistica dal 1997 (questa intervista verrà pubblicata su nostro sito ufficiale WWW.CATHOUSE.IT). È un piacere fare due chiacchiere con te. Ti seguo dal tuo disco d'esordio e ammetto che sei/siete una realtà musicale davvero valida.
Parlando di questo nuovo "Hostage", puoi dirmi come è nato, il processo di composizione e songwriting?
La maggior parte delle canzoni sono scritte da me, Vili e Tuomas. Teemu e Rolf sono stati coinvolti in un paio di canzoni. Dopo aver scritto la musica, scrivo i testi e poi registriamo l'album. Ho registrato la maggior parte delle voci da sola, di solito registriamo tutti i nostri strumenti tranne la batteria. Poi modifichiamo le tracce e Tuomas mixa l'album. Gli ultimi ritocchi al mix sono stati fatti da me, Vili e Tuomas. Prendo tutte le decisioni finali anche come produttore. L'album è stato masterizzato da Svante Forsbäck/Chartmakers.
...a mio modesto parere il nuovo album è leggermente meno heavy del debutto "20/20" e più intimo, anche se ovviamente ci sono brani power e alternative rock. Sei d'accordo?
Sì, sono d'accordo al 100%. Volevamo renderlo un po' meno pesante del precedente.
Una curiosità: siete una band prettamente hard, come mai avete scelto come singolo "Imperfect Day" il brano più melodico di tutto l'album?
Bene, abbiamo scelto i nostri brani preferiti come singoli. Amiamo tantissimo le ballate e le canzoni melodiche.
Mi ha colpito la finale e lunga "The Edge" una canzone molto particolare, lirica e intimista. C'è qualche messaggio particolare al suo interno che vuoi dare al tuo pubblico?
Il messaggio è scritto nella canzone. Vogliamo che l'ascoltatore provi un senso di sollievo quando la ascolta, deve provare un certo feeling e provare anche determinate emozioni.
Ammetto che fin dall'inizio sono rimasto piacevolmente colpito dalla tua voce...sei sicuramente una delle migliori vocalist femminili della scena hard rock. Come fai a mantenere la tua voce così potente e cristallina? E' tutto naturale o fai anche esercizi vocali e hai frequentato una scuola di canto?
Sono una cantante professionista di formazione classica. Ho iniziato a studiare canto all'età di 13 anni.
Ci sono altre vocalist donne nella scena musicale che ti piacciono e, soprattutto, la tua formazione musicale è stata ispirata da qualche artista in particolare?
Gli idoli del canto che avevo quando ero più giovane provenivano più dalla musica pop, Whitney Houston era la più importante. Lzzy Hale (femake singer e chitarrista ritmica degli Halestorm) e Noora Louhimo (female vocalist dei Battle Beast) hanno grandi voci.
parlando del tuo album, qual è l'aspetto più importante, la caratteristica migliore che ci trovi?
Canzoni forti e accattivanti.
...alla fine del lavoro sei contenta del risultato o vorresti cambiare qualcosa di questo disco?
No, è così che doveva essere, non cambierei nulla.
... una domanda particolare. Come ti definiresti con l'aiuto di un solo aggettivo come artista e come persona....e perché?
Onesta. Cerco di fare musica onestamente dal mio cuore, non faccio compromessi. Sono anche una persona molto onesta in generale. Non recito niente.
Hai altri progetti imminenti oltre alla promozione del disco. Tour dal vivo o qualcos'altro? Andrai in Italia??
Stiamo scrivendo il secondo album in duetto con Noora Louhimo e stiamo anche lavorando a un album con la mia band finnico-ecuadoriana Black Sun.

Hi Netta, I'm Roby Comanducci, founder of the Cathouse Italy Rock'n'Roll Project, a project that organizes events throughout Italy, DJ sets and also has an intense journalistic activity since 1997 (this interview will be published on our website official WWW.CATHOUSE.IT). It's a pleasure to have a chat with you. I have been following you since your debut album and I admit that you are a truly valid musical reality.
Talking about this new "Hostage", can you tell me how it was born, the composition and songwriting process?
Most of the songs are written by myself, Vili and Tuomas. Teemu and Rolf have been involved in a couple of songs. After writing the music I write the lyrics and then we record the album. I recorded most of the vocals myself, usually we all record our own instruments except drums. Then we edit the tracks and Tuomas mixed the album. The final touches to the mix were done by myself, Vili and Tuomas. I make all the final decisions as a producer. The album was mastered by Svante Forsbäck/Chartmakers.
in my humble opinion the new album is slightly less heavy than the debut "20/20" and more intimate, even if there are obviously power and alternative rock songs. Do you agree?
Yes, I agree 100%. We wanted to make it a bit less heavy.
A curiosity: you are a purely hard band, why did you choose the most melodic song of the whole album as single "Imperfect Day"?
Well, we chose our favourites as singles. We love ballads and melodic songs.
I was struck by the final and long "The Edge" a very particular song, lyrical and intimist. Is there any particular message within it that you want to give to your audience?
The message is written in the song. We want the listener to have a sense of relief when listening to it. To feel safe to feel whatever they are feeling.
I admit that from the very beginning I was pleasantly struck by your voice...you are certainly one of the best female vocalists in the hard rock scene. How do you keep your voice so powerful and crystal clear; is it all natural or do you also do vocal exercises and have you attended a singing school?
I am a professional, classicly trained singer. I started singing studies at age 13.
Are there other female vocalists in the music scene that you like and, above all, has your musical training been inspired by any particular artist?
The singing idols I had when I was younger were more from pop music, Whitney Houston being the most important. Lzzy Hale and Noora Louhimo have great voices.
talking about your album, what is the most important aspect, the best feature you find in it?
Strong, catchy songs.
at the end of the work are you happy or would you like to change something about this record?
No, it is the way it should be.
a particular question. How would you define yourself with the help of a single adjective as an artist and as a person....and why?
Honest. I try to make music honestly from my heart, I don’t make compromises. I’m also a very honest person in general. I don’t act anything.
Do you have other upcoming projects besides the promotion of the record. Live tour or something else? Will you go to Italy??
We are writing the second duet album with Noora Louhimo and also working on an album with my Finnish-Ecuadorian band Black Sun.
