Ciao Caterina, sono Nikki del Cathouse RnR Project Italy (www.cathouse.it). Ho appena recensito l'ultimo album dei Chaos Magic, “Emerge”, e mi ha davvero impressionato. Vorrei farti un paio di domande a riguardo.
Innanzitutto, il comunicato stampa lo classifica semplicemente come "Heavy Metal", e trovo divertente, dopo tutto, quante band vengano catalogate sotto questo genere musicale. Non mi piace classificare le band in generi, ma vorrei sentire quali sono i tuoi riferimenti musicali quando scrivi e suoni la tua musica? Dato che hai una grande esperienza nel fare musica, hai avuto qualche influenza all'inizio della tua carriera che non ritieni più importante o, al contrario, hai avuto recentemente qualcosa che ti ha davvero influenzato? (sia della scena “heavy metal” che non ovviamente)

Abbiamo diverse fonti di ispirazione, ma fondamentalmente puoi rilevare metal sinfonico, melodico, alternativo con tracce di elementi elettronici e molto pop, specialmente quando si tratta di strutture di canzoni e ritornelli memorabili. Quindi sì, se ci vedi nel quadro generale e senza molti dettagli, potremmo essere classificati come una band metal, ma siamo molto di più.
Per quanto riguarda le mie influenze all'inizio, ero molto interessata a Lacuna Coil e Within Temptation quando scrivevo per l'album “Oxygen” di Aghonya, e penso che tu possa vedere alcuni elementi di questo anche nella mia musica attuale, anche se ora cerco ispirazioni su band come Sevendust o Ember Falls ed Evanescence con un tocco moderno e sinfonico.

Venendo all'album, penso che ci sia un grande lavoro nel creare strutture melodiche che ci facciano apprezzare il tuo modo di cantare. Nella mia recensione ho scritto che la parte melodica è alla base della maggior parte dell'album, ma altre canzoni hanno un riffing più aggressivo, tanto da creare una sorta di contrasto tra i due. Sei d'accordo con queste considerazioni? C'era qualche altra idea di “alto livello” che volevi far emergere da questo lavoro?

Grazie, questo è sicuramente quello che stavamo cercando. È importante per me e Nass costruire un suono caratteristico e uno degli elementi di questo suono è il contrasto che citi, elemento molto melodico nella voce e nella musica, insieme a riff pesanti, memorabili e facili da ascoltare. Un altro elemento è una base elettronica di buon gusto. È lì, se presti attenzione, la base perfetta per trasportare il resto della musica.

La produzione di questo album è davvero fantastica, penso che abbia un ruolo importante nel renderlo un buon lavoro. I diversi strumenti e la voce sono ben fusi e creano così l'atmosfera che lo rende così intenso. Che considerazioni hai a riguardo? C'è un'evoluzione in questa parte del lavoro dell'album in relazione agli album precedenti di CM?

La produzione è una parte importante del lavoro ed è per lo più realizzata da Nasson con il mio contributo. Quindi sì, volevamo che questo album suonasse più intenso e profondo di “Furyborn”, ma c'è molto che amiamo di questo lavoro precedente che volevamo mantenere presente nel nostro sound. Direi che l'evoluzione da “Furyborn” a “Emerge” risiede nel dettaglio dei nuovi arrangiamenti e nell'elemento di complessità senza diventare noioso o difficile da comprendere.

Creare un album è un'attività complessa e penso che la maggior parte delle mie domande fino ad ora fossero legate al lavoro di Caterina e Nasson in esso; per favore, dicci qualche parola sul contributo alla musica di CM da parte degli altri membri, Mario, Mistheria e Carlos; e magari un pensiero sulla collaborazione con Elina in “Garden of Winter”.

In questa occasione, Nasson ha registrato e creato tutte le chitarre e le linee di basso e, per questioni di tempo e disponibilità, la batteria non è stata registrata da Carlos, quindi Mario e Carlos sono la nostra formazione dal vivo. Sono persone e musicisti fantastici e sono molto grata per la loro volontà di far parte della band e non vediamo l'ora di suonare nei prossimi spettacoli (Nightwish, Timo Tolkki e Myrath). Quanto a Mistheria, ha contribuito ancora una volta con noi, prendendo accordi per “Garden of Winter”. Tutti gli altri arrangiamenti tastiere/programmazione nell'album sono stati realizzati da Nasson. Ma Mistheria è molto più di un singolo collaboratore di una canzone. È stato al nostro fianco per tre tour europei suonando le tastiere e abbiamo stretto un'amicizia incredibile da quando mi ha invitato a partecipare al primo album dei VMP. Elina ha fatto un ottimo lavoro in “Garden of Winter”, è stata molto gentile e professionale e spero che alla fine potremo pubblicare un video con i testi di questo contributo.

Cosa c'è nel futuro di Chaos Magic? Ti sei posta degli obiettivi a medio o lungo termine ? Che cosa pensi della strada percorsa, come la giudichi? So che è una domanda personale, ma: cambieresti qualcosa di quello che hai fatto fino ad ora?

In questo momento, siamo concentrati sul rilascio di “Emerge” e su tutto ciò che comporta. Fare video, servizi fotografici, prove, ecc. Abbiamo alcuni buoni spettacoli locali in arrivo, quest'anno apriremo per Nightwish, Timo Tolkki e Myrath, quindi sarà un trionfante ritorno sui palcoscenici dopo anni in cui non siamo stati in grado di suonare dal vivo! Ma l'incertezza rimane con la situazione covid, vediamo ancora gli spettacoli cancellati o posticipati, quindi sento che non è ancora il momento di pianificare un altro tour all'estero, considerando i costi che potrebbero comportare, soprattutto se volassimo dal Cile. Forse alla fine del 2023-2024 quando le cose saranno più normali. Cambierei qualcosa della mia carriera? Assolutamente no! Ho ottenuto così tanto venendo da un paese che praticamente non ha nulla a che fare con questo stile musicale e sono molto orgogliosa del mio viaggio. Sono molto motivata e non vedo l'ora di continuare a lavorare per far crescere questo progetto e sperare che un giorno raggiunga la stagione dei festival in Europa.

Grazie per il tempo speso a rispondere, e per il bellissimo lavoro di “Emerge”, è molto lontano il Cile all'Italia ma forse potremmo sentirti dal vivo prima o poi. Buona fortuna e auguro il meglio per tutti voi.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

Hi guys, here is Nikki from Cathouse RnR Project Italy (www.cathouse.it). I just reviewed latest Chaos Magic album, Emerge, and it really impressed me. I would like to ask you a couple of question on it.

First, the press release just classifies it as “Heavy Metal”, and I find funny after all, how many things under this musical genre. I do not like to classify bands into genres, but I want to hear from you, what are your musical references when writing and playing your music? Since you have a great experience in making music, did you have any influence at the beginning of your career that you do not consider any more important or, at the opposite, did you get recently something that really influenced you? (both from the “heavy metal” scene or not of course)

We have different sources of inspiration, but you can basically detect symphonic, melodic, alternative metal with traces of electronic elements and a lot of pop, especially when it comes to song structures and memorable choruses. So yes, if you see us in the big picture and without a lot of detail, we could be classified as a Metal band, but it’s much more than that. As for my influences early on, I was a lot into Lacuna Coil and Within Temptation when I was writing for Aghonya’s Oxygen album, and I think you can see certain elements of that in my current music too, although now I look further for inspirations, on bands such as Sevendust or Ember Falls and Evanescence with a modern and symphonic twist.

Coming to the album, I think there is a great work in creating melodic structures that really makes us enjoy Caterina’s way of singing. In my review, I wrote that the melodic part is the base for most of the album, but other songs have a more aggressive riffing, as to create a sort of contrast between the two. Did you agree to those considerations? There was some other “high level” idea that you wanted to emerge from this work?

Thank you, that´s definitely what we were going for. It´s important for Nass and I to build a characteristic sound and one of the elements of this sound is the contrast you mention, very melodic element in the voice and music, along with heavy, memorable and easy-to-hear riffs. Another element is a very tasteful electronic base. It’s there if you pay attention, but if you don´t, it´s still the perfect base to carry the rest of the music.

Production of this album is really cool, I think it has a great part in making it such a good work. The different instruments and the vocals are well merged and so create the atmosphere that makes it so intense. What considerations do you have on this? Is there an evolution in this part of the album’s work in relation to former CM’s albums?

The production is a big part of the work and it´s mostly done by Nasson with my input. So yes, we wanted this album to sound more intense and deeper than Furyborn, but there is a lot that we love about this previous work that we wanted to keep present in our sound. I would say that the evolution from Furyborn to Emerge lies in the detail of the new arrangements and the element of complexity without getting boring or hard to comprehend.

Creating an album is a complex activity, and I think most of my questions until now were related to Caterina’s and Nasson’s work in it; please, give us some words on the contribution to CM’s music from the other members, Mario, Mistheria and Carlos; and maybe a thought on the collaboration with Elina in “Garden of winter”.

On this occasion, Nasson recorded and created all guitars and bass lines, and for matters of time and availability, the drums were not recorded by Carlos, so Mario and Carlos are our live show line-up. They are amazing people and musicians and I´m very thankful for their will to be part of the band and we’re all looking forward for the upcoming shows (Nightwish, Timo Tolkki and Myrath). As for Mistheria, he contributed once more with us, making arrangements for Garden of Winter. All the other keyboard/programming arrangements in the album were made by Nasson. But Mistheria is much more than a single song contributor. He has been by our side for 3 European tours playing keyboards and we have forged and amazing friendship since he invited me to participate on the first VMP album. Elina made a wonderful job in Garden of Winter, she was very nice and professional and I hope we can eventually release a lyric video of this contribution.

What’s in the future of Chaos Magic? Did you pose some medium or long terms objectives in your minds? What on the road until now, how do you judge it? I know is a personal question, but: would you change something of what you did until now?

Right now, we’re focused on the release of Emerge and everything that entails. Making videos, photoshoots, rehearsing, etc. We have some good local shows coming, we’ll be opening for Nightwish, Timo Tolkki and Myrath this year so it will be a triumphant return to the stages after years of being unable to play live! But the uncertainty remains with the covid situation, we still see shows being cancelled or postponed over it, so I feel it’s still not time to plan another tour abroad, considering the costs that may bring, especially if were flying from Chile. Maybe late 2023-2024 when things are more normal. Would I change something about my career? Absolutely not! I have achieved so much coming from a country that pretty much has nothing to do with this style of music and I’m very proud of my journey. I’m very motivated and I can’t wait to keep on working to make this project grow and hopefully hit festival season in Europe one day.
